The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Music Director Robert Spano will present the world premiere of Wynton Marsalis's American Symphony in Atlanta November 19-21, 2009. This will be Mr. Marsalis's first all-orchestral composition.

A jazz musician, trumpeter, composer, bandleader, advocate for the arts, and educator, Wynton Marsalis has helped propel jazz to the forefront of American culture. His prominent position in American culture was solidified in April 1997, when he became the first jazz artist to be awarded the Pulitzer Prize in music for his work Blood on the Fields, which was commissioned by Jazz at Lincoln Center. He has served as the world-renowned arts organizations artistic director as well as music director of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (formerly known as the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra) since its inception.

In 1999 the New York Philharmonic gave the world premiere of Mr. Marsaliss work, All Rise. In addition to the orchestra, this work incorporated jazz orchestra and choir. American Symphony is his first composition written exclusively for a symphony orchestra.

The Atlanta concerts will also include works by legendary American composers, Leonard Bernstein and George Gershwin.

American Symphony is an Atlanta Symphony Orchestra co-commission with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, with generous support from the National Black Arts Festival.
