RITCH ESRA - Moderator
Since 1992, Ritch Esra and Stephen Trumbull have been running the Music Business Registry which includes The A&R Registry, The Publisher Registry, The Music Business Attorney Registry, The Record Producer Directory and The Film and Television Music Guide. “The directories give everyone vital, accurate and the most up to date information they need to contact the entire A&R, music, publishing, legal and film/TV music communities," says Ritch. “Each directory tells you how to reach these industry veterans by regular mail, E-mail (including web sites), direct dial telephone and fax. Additionally, we provide the exact title, street address, the name of their assistant and the style of music that each executive deals with. There's no directory of this kind anywhere in the world."

Ritch started out as a promotion coordinator for A&M Records in Los Angeles in 1980-81. Ritch was director of West Coast A&R for Arista Records. He signed The Thompson Twins to their US Deal as well as Mara Getz. He worked extensively with the publishing and songwriting communities for material for Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, Dionne Warwick, Melissa Manchester, Tanya Tucker, Jennifer Warnes and Jermaine Jackson. He also coordinated music for the Ghostbusters and Perfect soundtracks. He produced the award-winning educational video for artists and musicians, “How to Get a Record Deal" and much more.

From 1987 to the present, Ritch has been the chief instructor at the Trebas Institute of Recording Arts in Los Angeles, as well as at UCLA Extension, USC, Musicians Institute and SAE teaching several courses including: A&R - The Heartbeat of the Record Company, which focused on the artist signing policies of major and independent record labels; Music Business Overview - a course designed to give students an understanding of the many aspects of the Music Industry. He was a member of the board of advisors for the Department of Performing Arts at UCLA for 3 years 1990 - 1993, and initiated full day seminars and discussion panels on the music business as well as created new course ideas and methods for expanding programs to keep students enrolled in the UCLA Extension program.

PENELOPE SPHEERIS - Film Director
She admits that she has two distinct careers, one where she does mainstream Hollywood films like Wayne's World, The Beverly Hillbillies, The Little Rascals and the other, where she does independent music themed documentaries like the Decline of Western Civilization films. She studied psychobiology (studying how the brain reacts to external forces) and film in college, eventually attending the film program at UCLA. After college, she producedshort and feature length films directed by comic Albert Brooks, some of which were shown during the first season of Saturday Night Live (1975). She was the oldest of four children. She often had to look after her siblings because her dad was killed when she was seven and her mom worked several jobs. She often chooses to interview musicians with troubled backgrounds because she feels her background was just as troubled. Declined the offer to direct This Is Spinal Tap (1984), because she thought you couldn't make fun of Heavy Metal music. “The Decline of Western Civilization (1981) was financed by two businessmen from the Valley who wanted to finance a porn movie. They had no idea I was going in to pitch a punk rock movie. I generally think about myself as someone who studies human behavior and is trying to figure out what the hell is going on in our current society. If I can leave any film that helps define a certain time after I'm dead then that's great."[On why she does documentaries about metal and punk music] “I mean, look, you don't see me making documentaries on Britney Spears, you know what I mean? Sweetheart of a little girl, you know. Or Madonna. That's not my thing. I just like this harder edge stuff. That's just me."
