Westchester Jazz Orchestra
Westchester, NY The Westchester Jazz Orchestra is a world-class band well-known for their extraordinary concerts. This exceptional performing group also conducts educational workshops and is running a two-day clinic with jazz students from New Rochelle High School that began yesterday.

Mike Holober, WJOs Artistic Director, is leading the workshops. One of the most important experiences a developing instrumentalist can have is interacting with stronger, more experienced musicians, he says. This clinic allows students to do exactly that as they spend time with and play alongside WJOs professionals.

Five other WJO musicians are teaching with Holober. At yesterdays session, they gave the student band pointers on instrument fundamentals and practicing, as well as on how to improve their ensemble playing. The young players received instruction all together and also in small groups. On Monday, the WJO sextet will perform at the school, with the student band joining in for one number.

Rob Freeberg, Band Director at New Rochelle High School, arranged for the residency. WJO came here a few years ago and the students were very motivated by the experience. Its a great opportunity for young jazz players to hear top quality professionals and learn from them.

WJOs educational initiatives already extend to their season concerts with the incredibly low student ticket price of $5. The Orchestra recently added another reason for student to attend: every school that brings at least 15 students to one of the remaining season concerts this year on April 18 or June 6 will be entered in a drawing to win a free 2-hour clinic with Mike Holober.

WJOs upcoming concerts include Jazz Goes to the Movies on Sat, April 18, and You Say You Want a Revolution: WJO Takes on the 60s on Sat, June 6. Both performances will begin at 8 PM. In addition, a sextet from WJO will appear as part of the Jazz on Film series of the Jacob Burns Film Center on Thurs, April 16.

WJOs performances are partially funded by the New York State Council on the Arts, ArtsWestchester and the Aaron Copland Fund for Music.

Reserved seating tickets for season concerts are $35 for adults, $30 for seniors and only $5 for students. Order online at www.westjazzorch.org or by telephone at the Irvington Theater box office at 914-591-6602. School personnel should contact Emily Tabin at 914-861-9100 or [email protected]. # # #
