West Coast Jazz Party Ready to Swing Again

The Labor Day weekend bash attracts musicians and jazz buffs from around the world.

It's nearing the end of summer, so everyone is cramming in the most they can - going to the beach, having barbecues and all that jazz. But for music aficionados, they really are soaking in as much jazz as they can at the end of the season.

Featuring more than 70 musicians, the 14th annual West Coast Jazz Party and Brunch Cruise will be held Aug. 28-31 at the Marriott Hotel in Irvine, organizers said.

“I think the message is just that this particular year is we're trying to feature some really spectacular players," co-producer John McClure said.

The event, with ticket prices ranging from $30-$360, will include the more traditional on-stage concerts, but also sprinklings of a showcase on the sea, poolside performances and more intimate lobby recitals, McClure said.

Those interested in attending the event can either purchase tickets for individual sessions or a package for the entire four-day, three-night event - publicized as more than 33 hours of jazz.

Some of the artists expected are pianist Benny Green, clarinetist Ken Peplowski and the Susie Hansen Latin Jazz Band.

“Musically, we always think (each successive year) is the best because we get to know more and more artists," president of the West Coast Jazz Party Joe Rothman said. “Artistically, we just know it's going to be great."
