Christian Howes makes his NYC debut as a leader August 18th, 10 p.m. at the 55 Bar (55 Christopher St.). The globetrotting jazz violinist from Columbus, Ohio isn't a stranger to NYC venues, having performed as a featured guest with jazz luminaries from the traditional to the avant-garde, including Greg Osby, Steve Turre, Akua Dixon's Quartette Indigo, D.D. Jackson, Rez Abbasi and Les Paul. In the past year, Howes has performed over 90 concerts as leader in Europe in addition to many appearances in the Midwestern U.S., including the Velvet Lounge in Chicago, Blues Alley in Washington D.C, and a main spot at Cleveland's Tri-C Jazz Fest.
As a jazz violinist Howes is distinguished from the others by his compositional ability, virtuosity, versatility, and through the truly swinging, blues-steeped, soulfulness of his playing. Says Neal Tesser, Not since Jean-Luc Ponty has a violinist ranged from pure classical to fuzz-tone rock to convincing jazz with such authority".
