This Saturday night vibraphonist Tom Beckham will bring his quartet to Detour (http://www.jazzatdetour.com), NYC for a night of original compositions. The quartet features long-time bandmate Chris Cheek, saxes plus Diego Voglino, drums, and Dave Ambrosio, Bass. Since releasing his first recording as a leader entitled Suspicions (Fresh Sound New Talent) Tom has been active in and around Manhattan performing with his own band, and as a sideman in bands such as George Schuller's Circle Wide, the Sam Bardfeld Quintet, and a new project with vocalist Maryanne Deprophetis, trumpeter Ron Horton, and bassist Masa Kamaguchi entitled Cuadro.
Tom has recently been composing tunes for an upcoming recording which will take place in December 2004. Many of the tunes in his book have yet to be recorded so consider this upcoming gig a chance to hear some new material by this talented vibist/composer. The All Music Guide (AMG) wrote of Suspicions Tom Beckham's accessible, laid-back compositions and resplendent playing style make Suspicions an album worth seeking out. ...a superior conceptualist. Jazztimes magazine wrote ... his debut session, Suspicions, delivers a solid dose of clear-eyed hard bop. Joined by a superb trio of fellow Berklee chums and Fresh Sound regularssaxophonist Chris Cheek, bassist Reid Anderson and drummer George SchullerBeckhams warmly melodic writing is well served by his middle-of-the-road approach, one situated between the slow-burn soul of Milt Jackson and the pianism of Gary Burton... The Village Voice wrote: ...When he takes the stage he invariably amplifies the albums energy. Ive seen him stress his instruments percussive side, and in doing so, stretch a solo into a trance-like soliloquy.
