UNESCO declares April 30th as International Jazz Day
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization—UNESCO— proclaimed at the 36th session of its General Conference, that April 30th of each year be known as International Jazz Day.
At the 36th meeting of its General Conference, UNESCO Member States agreed to proclaim the International Jazz Day. The designation of April 30th of each year as International Jazz Day will bring closer together communities, schools and other groups around the world in order to celebrate the art of jazz, learn more about it and find out how it became part of their respective cultures.
Jazz: Jazz functions as a process of inclusion by allowing each player to develop a unique personal style. Improvisation and interpretation, essential components, all contribute to make jazz an art form in perpetual renewal that continues to attract new generations. Jazz is synonymous with freedom for its musicians, who are free to invent and create every time they play a tune, and their fans, who listen. Reason as to why it was banned in many totalitarian regimes around the world.
TODAY, global understanding, international cooperation, freedom of thought and a dynamic cultural interaction are needed more than ever, and jazz fits perfectly with these values. April 30th of each year will be devoted to enhance the joy that jazz can provide as a unifying force; strengthen unity, dialogue and cooperation between people. A large number of organizations dedicated to promoting jazz will now take the opportunity to further promote the appreciation of not only music but also the contribution that jazz can make towards building a better society.
SANTO DOMINGO CELEBRATES JAZZ!!!
Jazz en Dominicana, the Dominican Fiesta Hotel & Casino, Sunset Jazz Lounge Club and it´s weekly venue—Fiesta Sunset Jazz—in collaboration with the Dominican Republic´s National Commission for UNESCO and the Dominican Republic Ministry of Culture, join these celebrations with two concerts to be held in La Azotea (8th Floor) of the Dominican Fiesta Hotel & Casino, and, with the support of UNESCO, will be recorded as part of the celebrations that will be held internationally as part of this great party.
The Ministry of Culture will be awarding special recognition to musicians, educators, promoters and producers of Jazz in the Dominican Republic.
On Friday, April 27th Fiesta Sunset Jazz will present a concert by Sandy Gabriel and Puerto Plata Jazz Ensamble. When we speak of saxophone players in our country today, the first name to pop in is, without a doubt, Sandy Gabriel. Saxophonist, composer, arranger, band leader; on of the most sought out musicians in the Dominican Republic—now in midst of making himself known worldwide. Recently nominated for the Casandra 2012 Awards for both his recently released album, as well as the concert with the same name—Jazzeando. Sandy and POP Jazz Ensamble will be in charge of a night full of improvisational riches where they will establish dialogues amongst themselves and the audience—creating a musical language that will reach out to one and all present. Standards, Blues, Latin, Funk; original arrangements and compositions. A night of excellent music to celebrate this International Jazz Day. And, for those not being able to be at the concert, or if you live outside of Santo Domingo, or the Dominican Republic—you can join in and listen to the entire concert via Compasillo´s internet radio feed at www.compasillo.com.
And on Friday, May 4th the celebration will continue with the O M Trio. This group is formed by pianist, composer and arranger Oscar Micheli, the talented and drummer Guy Frometa and formidable bassist Esar Simó. They will deliver a night of straight-ahead jazz with Latin in which the special sound of the acoustic bass gives special hues to an already colorful repertoire of original compositions and a number of known standards with innovative arrangements that will result in a night of jazz to remember.
These concerts will be our way of actively participating in the celebration of this important event, and they will formally be part of similar events that will be taking place in many places all over the Uinted States and around the world. The celebration will begin on Friday, April 27th in Washington, D.C. with Herbie Hancock, Goodwill Ambassador of UNESCO, and a large group of musicians, educators, historians and others; there will be concerts, workshops, lectures and celebrations in Boston, Chicago, Houston, New York, and many cities around the world. Santo Domingo will also celebrate Jazz!
Also collaborating will be local radio station 97.7FM; Compasillo Radio, Grabo*Estilo and Chivas Regal. All present will receive gifts, amongst them the new album—Alex Diaz & His Jazz Merengue—Beyond 145th Street.
