Tom Toyama: Unique Jazz Vibist at IAJE Conference, January 12, 2006 at 10:00 AM

Selected from many artists applicants, jazz vibraphonist Tom Toyama will be given the opportunity to demonstrate his unique style of solo vibraphone playing at the 33rd Annual International Association of Jazz Educators (IAJE) International Conference.

From performing on a 4-octave vibe with four mallets for many years, Tom has developed a unique solo style of playing using the extended range. Most players use 3-octave vibes.

Tom will present his “Solo Jazz Vibraphone Mastery Clinic" in the Murray Hill Suite of the Hilton Hotel in New York City on January 12, 2006 at 10:00 AM.

His performance experience includes Mongo Santamaria, Robert Thomas Jr., Ira Sullivan, Claudio Roditi, Terrance Blanchard, Paquito D'Rivera, Frank Wess, Edgar Meyer, Charnett Moffett, the Natalie Cole Orchestra, Japanese koto master Tamiko Asai, taiko drum master Takemasa Ishikura, and shakuhachi master Seizan Sakata.

He has been featured at the Jacksonville Jazz Festival; Clearwater Jazz Festivals; Feierwerk Music Festival in Munich, Germany; Arts International Music of the Americas Festival; Southern Arts Federation's Southern Arts Exchange; the Summit of the Americas; Jazz Discovery on Black Entertainment Television; Expressions on WLRN Public Television; and the International Percussive Arts Society Convention.

His other upcoming appearances include the University of Illinois in Urbana on March 3, 2006, Indiana University in Bloomington on March 4, 2006, Southwest Florida Percussion Camp in Ft. Myers, Florida, on June 12, 2006; and at the International Puerto Rico Percussion Festival in San Juan, in August of 2006.
