Saxophonist Joshua Redman is one of the leading players and personalities in jazz. His stellar recording's Wish and Moodswing not only set the tone for emerging jazz musicians back in the middle 90's but help establish the charismatic saxophonist to become a fan favorite and critical success. Throughout the years, Joshua has been extremely active as a band leader, recording artist and touring musician. He was also artistic director for the San Francisco Jazz Festival and the first leader of the critically acclaimed ensemble SF Jazz Collective from 2004-2007. Joshua continues to steadily work, record and tour with his own bands and is also a founding member of the collaborative group James Farm.
On this Traneumentary episode, Joshua shares his personal story of John Coltrane. Featured excerpts include: Acknowledgement," Crescent" and Wise One."
I love jazz because it’s what sounds
I was first exposed to jazz in my
parents household and in school
I appreciate many styles of jazz
and shy away from really outside
stuff. I enjoy relating to the
One of the best shows I ever
attended was 1975 Chick Corea’s
Return To Forever tour at an
intimate venue in downtown
The first jazz record I bought was
Herbie Hancock’s Chameleon.
My advice to new listeners is try
several styles before you decide
what jazz is all about!
Listen to music daily and stay open
