Capital Jazz Fest At Sea
October 10-17, 2009

Third Edition of World’s Largest Jazz Cruise Features Singer/Songwriter Kem Introducing Music from his Eagerly Anticipated Third Album, Plus Joe Sample, Patti Austin, David Sanborn, Jonathan Butler, Brian Culbertson, Candy Dulfer and MORE!

Lovers of good times and great contemporary jazz will come together once again for the most exciting non-stop party at sea when SuperCruise III sets sail for the full week of October 10-17 – departing from Baltimore for ports of call Nassau/Paradise Island, Coco Cay and Key West! What started as a celebration of the 15th anniversary of the Capital Jazz Fest in 2007 has turned into an annual entertainment extravaganza at sea. Capital Jazz will once again take over the entire 2400-passenger Royal Caribbean Grandeur of the Seas cruise ship – the largest of any vessel hosting jazz cruises - for seven days and nights of concerts, parties, jam sessions, comedy, activities, mixers and so much more.

This year’s lineup of proven and premier party starters includes singular singer/songwriter Kem (who will be performing music from his eagerly-awaited Kem III CD), jazz legends Joe Sample and David Sanborn, all-around vocal diva Patti Austin, South African singer-guitarist Jonathan Butler, crowd-pleasing funky favorites Brian Culbertson and Candy Dulfer, the incomparable Najee, smooth jazz trumpeters Rick Braun and Joey Sommerville, multi-cultural Latin Soul band WAR (featuring founding singer-keyboardist Lonnie Jordan), sax man B.K. Jackson, and the Hidden Beach Unwrapped Band (featuring violinist Karen Briggs, trumpeter Jeff Bradshaw and saxophone sensation Mike Phillips, who will also serve as this year’s “Jam Session Host”). Holding things down on deck will be house band Spur of the Moment, comedian A.J. Jamal and special guest DJ Spinderella (of Salt N Pepa fame). Plus there’s even more yet to be announced!

Every year, SuperCruise producer and promoter Cliff Hunte and his staff shrewdly and tirelessly plan a powerful lineup of indisputable stars and exciting activities that push the party limit past the years before. The emphasis for 2009: a perfect balance of Capital Jazz favorites! Key to the fun are jam sessions full of once-in-a-lifetime team-ups and surprises, plus unforgettable up close and casual encounters between the stars and their fans, including “The Brian Culbertson Ping Pong Tournament” and “Patti Austin’s For Women Only Workshop.”

Whatever your level of energy or relaxation, SuperCruise III has you covered from bow to stern! Beyond the amazing music are a host of themed activities and parties such as the “Pajama Jammy-Jam” pool party (inspired by the one immortalized in Spike Lee’s film School Daze), “The SuperCruise Beach Bash & BBQ” (held on the private island of Coco Cay), dance contests, a “Battle of the Sexes Contest”, Casino Royale, comedy, wine and martini tastings, “Sadie Hawkins Night,” singles mixers, the “Love & Marriage” couples competition, cardio kickboxing, movies, salsa and belly dancing, open mic and karaoke, card games and so much more. With non-stop entertainment throughout the day and night, there's more than you can possibly do on a single cruise! Whether you're traveling solo, with a friend, family member, or significant other, SuperCruise III guarantees fun for everyone.

SuperCruise III is a spin-off the highly successful Capital Jazz Fest, an event that for 17 exciting years has provided contemporary jazz lovers in Washington / Baltimore with a knockout annual all-star affair to remember. Founded in 1993, Capital Jazz Fest swiftly became the most anticipated music event thanks to its relaxing idyllic setting, people-watching, art, delicious food, crafts, and, of course, all the great live music. Hunte states, “I’ve visited festivals all over the world asking music fans what they love to experience in an outdoor festival setting. Every year we raise the bar of our event.” This year’s Capital Jazz Fest – taking place June 5-7, 2009, at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland, features first-time headliner Natalie Cole, a reunion of All FOUR original members of En Vogue, Roy Ayers, Raheem DeVaughan, SMV (the superstar bass trio of Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller and Victor Wooten), Al Jarreau, Lalah Hathaway, Peabo Bryson, George Duke, Kirk Whalum, Fourplay, Will Downing, Norman Brown, Gary Taylor, Pieces of a Dream, Phil Perry and the fetching female threesome of Maysa, N’Dea Davenport and Caron Wheeler – among many more.

To promote both SuperCruise and Capital Jazz Fest, Cliff Hunte created Capital Jazz Radio (www.capitaljazz.com/radio), kicking out kinetically stimulating “Jazz That Rocks…24/7.” This online station has inadvertently surpassed its original cross-marketing purpose by filling the gaping void left by the demise of so many smooth jazz stations on the east coast. All three of these timely entertainment developments are providing discriminating music fans with fresh outlets to enjoy high quality/high energy jazz.

SuperCruise III promises to be the splashiest high seas party ever! Producer Hunte reflects, “It’s during the jam sessions when the magic really happens! I love seeing folks have a good time. It’s what keeps me going and keeps them coming back - year after year.”

Tickets are now on sale for Capital Jazz SuperCruise III, “The Jazz Vacation of a Lifetime,” and Capital Jazz Fest – “The Woodstock of Jazz Festivals” (as described by guitarist Chuck Loeb) the first great music event of every east coast summer!
