NEW CD RELEASES: The Brooklyn Sax Quartet - “Far Side of Here" in stores now on OmniTone - a tribute to former band member, the late Sam Furnace, and a saxophone and improvisation tour de force featuring the compositions of BSQ leaders David Bindman (tenor) and Fred Ho (bari), plus riveting new takes on “A Night In Tunisia" and “Lush Life." “Far Side of Here" also features the inspiring playing of John O'Gallagher on soprano saxophone, and Sam Furnace and Rudresh Mahanthappa on alto saxophone. “While melding sounds of the teeming borough of Brooklyn, the quartet unites jazz with music from Africa, China and around the globe.” – The Daily News. “...it's a treat to hear...At some point they break into pairs for contrast, at others allowing a lone voice rise above the group action.” – Gary Giddins, The Village Voice

Mick Rossi - “One Block From Planet Earth" (rel 3/15 on OmniTone) - The title of this killin' CD is literally an apartment Mick once occupied that was one block from a used clothing store called Planet Earth, and figuratively where this gifted musician finds himself artistically. The recording is an engaging live documentation from the Knitting Factory of all original Rossi compositions, featuring Rossi on piano with some of the top improvisers in the world; Russ Johnson on trumpet, Andy Laster on reeds, Mark Dresser on bass and Charles Descarfino on drums and percussion. Check this album out and hear why none other than Philip Glass has Mick Rossi on piano and percussion in his ensemble. Rossi will be appearing with The Philip Glass Ensemble at Lincoln Center on Thursday, June 2, Friday, June 3, and Saturday, June 4. For more information, please visit www.lincolncenter.org

Avishai Cohen - At Home (rel on 2/22 on Avishai's own RazDaz Recordz) - Avishai's 6th recording as a leader and arguably his best work to date. All original compositions performed by the outstanding trio of Cohen, Sam Barsh on piano and Mark Guiliana on drums, with special guests Yosvanny Terry, Anne Drummond, Diego Urcola, Jeff Ballard and Tomer Tzur. “True to its title, Avishai Cohen’s new disc At Home (RazDaz), is the bassist-composer’s way of showing that he’s comfortable with everything from postbop to drum ‘n’ bass.” K. Leander Williams, Time Out New York. “ . . . one of the most gifted bassists of his generation is finding his own voice as a composer.” The New Yorker “ . . . one of the best double-bassists in the world.” Kerstan Mackness, Time Out London

UPCOMING CD RELEASES: Roni Ben-Hur - “Signature," (coming out on June 22 on Reservoir) - Guitarist Roni Ben-Hur's most personal statement on record yet, “Signature" features music that is near and dear to the guitarist's heart. Throughout the recording, Ben-Hur, with John Hicks on piano, Rufus Reid on bass, Leroy Williams on drums and Steve Kroon on percussion, delivers burning and melodically rich versions of originals, and compositions by Jobim, Porter, Hicks, Arlen and the late classical composer from Rio de Janeiro, Heitor Villa-Lobos. “ . . . Ben-Hur is a self-assured artist in the tradition of Jim Hall and Tal Farlow." - Jazzreviews.com. “"The talents of Roni Ben-Hur become evident with his first few notes." - The Portland Skanner

New York Electric Piano - “Citizen Zen" (in stores on June 5 on Midlantic Records) - featuring pianist Pat Daugherty (on Fender Rhodes), bassist Tim Givens and drummer Aaron Comess (of The Spin Doctors). “From start to finish, this highly interactive trio grooves with crackling intensity and a rare degree of group think. . .” Bill Milkowski “On keyboards is Pat Daugherty, who does not merely play the electric piano, but takes you on a sonic tour of the sounds that the Rhodes is capable of producing. He even uses a “lead and rhythm electric piano" approach on some songs. Drummer Aaron Comess and bassist Tim Givens, who provide very tight support and intuitive/solid playing, round out the band." - Allaboutjazz.com

All About Jazz & Jazz Near You were built to promote jazz music: both recorded and live events. We rely primarily on venues, festivals and musicians to promote their events through our platform. With club closures, shelter in place and an uncertain future, we've pivoted our platform to collect, promote and broadcast livestream concerts to support our jazz musician friends. This is a significant but neccesary effort that will help musicians now, and in the future. You can help offset the cost of this essential undertaking by making a donation today. In return, we'll deliver an ad-free experience (which includes hiding the bottom right video ad). Thank you.
