The week before Halloween and don't be spooked out if you hear some jazz goblins nearby! The options this weekend and over the following nights are scarily good.

Big Gigs This Week

Friday, October 24. One of the Twin Cities most prolific composers and a frequent bandleader, Jeremy Walker rounds up a quartet  of frequent cohorts for his turn on The Bridge series at Jazz Central. The saxophonist -turned- pianist shares the stage with saxman Scott Fultz, bassist Jeff Brueske and young drummer Miguel Hurtado. Stick around for the late set at 10 pm, because tonight's treat is a homecoming gig for silky smooth vocalist Aaron Keith Stewart, here for a visit from his new home in California.

And as long as you are out late, stop by the Dakota for “Late Night" with the Kevin Washington Quintet. The Detroit native is a proven bandleader in a modern vein with touches of funk and soul. Saturday, October 25. Curator of the new Saturday Night Jazz series at the Black Dog, tonight trumpet master Steve Kenny brings in his own quartet, featuring local stars Brandon Wozniak, Chris Bates and JT Bates.  JT's just back from a European tour with the Craig Taborn Trio. And anytime Steve takes the bandstand, you know the evening will be a party for your ears. Come early (7 pm) and hear some sublime solo guitar from veteran David Roos.

Dinner and music is still a great date for a Saturday night, and dinner sets at the Icehouse on weekends typically feature a duo of local titans. Tonight, enjoy the cross-generational vibe of saxophonist Dave Karr and pianist Bryan Nichols. And always fun, sassy and full of soul, vocalist Pippi Ardennia celebrates her birthday doing what she loves best— performing—tonight at Bedlam in Saint Paul. Monday, October 27. It's not the usual jazz, fusion or pop band at the Dakota tonight, but four stellar musicians taking on tunes that at one time or another hit the top of the Top 40 charts. Dubbed Omaha Diner, the band features 7-string magician Charlie Hunter, saxophonics pioneer Skerik, Guggenheim Fellow and eclectic drummer Bobby Previte, and Sex Mob/Lounge Lizards/Millennial Territory Orchestra trumpeter Steven Bernstein.

Over at Jazz Central, saxophonist/flautist Doug Little (Seven Steps to Havana, Charanga Tropicale) takes the spotlight as the Featured Artist, while a bit later, the Zacc Harris Quartet takes the stage for Jazz Implosion at the Icehouse. You can't go wrong no matter what direction pulls you in tonight.

Tuesday, October 28. Over the past year, swinging pianist Rick Carlson has performed in duo or trio monthly at Cafe Maude. Tonight you can double your pleasure as wife Maude Hixson joins Rick for an evening of song, and most likely some songs that you just don't hear often if ever. And rarely performed with such heart and skill.

Wednesday, October 29. Before he relocated to New York earlier this fall, bassist Brian Courage had co-lead a cutting edge band of young monsters dubbed Courageous Endeavors. His partner, drummer Miguel Hurtado, has reconfigured the ensemble as Endeavors, which performs tonight on the New Music series at Jazz Central. Given his other successes as bandleader, Miguel will no doubt give us an evening of exciting compositions and arrangements. Thursday, October 30. Once upon a time, guitarist Joel Shapira and bassist Bruce (Pooch) Heine were two-thirds of Triplicate. Now they are two-thirds of Trioleo, with drummer Dave Schmalenberger, playing original tunes and modern arrangements of jazz classics. Tonight they're on stage at the Black Dog, which is fast becoming one of the Twin Cities' prime incubators of modern jazz. Complete with wine, beer, espresso and tasty bar menu. And Light Rail.
