Berkeley, California, Aug 21, 2006 -- The Jazzschool's Fall 2006 catalog, just off the presses, promises a wealth of new classes, workshops, and programs for students of all levels and aspirations. “We want to help our students to refine their craft, express themselves artistically, and simply enhance their everyday lives in the classroom and on the stage," says Executive Director Susan Muscarella, who founded the Jazzschool in 1997.

Muscarella is particularly excited about the school's new Artist in Residence Program, which debuts this fall with vocalist Madeline Eastman and pianist Taylor Eigsti. In addition to conducting specialized workshops and master classes, these two exceptional artists will join forces for a not-to-be-missed December 10th concert at the Jazzschool.

Other highlights of the new quarter are a Trumpet Embouchure Workshop and Trumpet Master Class, both led by Dave Scott; an Arranging class with Frank Martin; Basic Recording Techniques, by Jim Bennett; the Music of Steely Dan, taught by Wayne Wallace; and a Lyric Writing class with Laurie Antonioli, who has returned to the Bay Area from a teaching position in Austria to serve as Advisor to the Jazzschool Vocal Program.

Also offered are master classes with drummer Peter Erskine, Yellowjackets pianist Russell Ferrante, saxophonist/composer/arranger Jimmy Heath, vibraphonists Joe Locke and Christos Rafalides, and Venezuelan cuatro player Hernan Gamboa.

Thanks to the generous support of Jazzschool Board Member Gregg Perloff, CEO of Another Planet Entertainment, the Jazzschool is set to launch the Jazzschool Middle School Project (JMSP). This after-school music study and performance program is designed to support music education programs at King, Longfellow, and Willard Middle Schools in Berkeley. The yearlong program, which is held at the Jazzschool and overseen by Jazzschool Youth Program Coordinator Rob Ewing, includes twice-weekly classes in Jazz and Blues Ensemble; Inside the Music: Theory and Improvisation; Music from Around the World; and The Story of Jazz. Auditions for the Middle School Project are scheduled for the weekend of September 9 (contact [email protected]).

The photo on the cover of the new Jazzschool catalog - “Hat and Trumpet" - was taken by Bay Area photographer Scott Chernis, from a series he shot in New Orleans. Nineteen other striking black and white photos from the series appear throughout the catalog, and are available for sale from Chernis's web site (www.scottchernis.com). Proceeds will go to the New Orleans Musicians Hurricane Relief Fund and the New Orleans Musicians Clinic.
