The Henry Grimes/ Marc Ribot Duo will be performing in concert at The Rubin Museum in NYC on March 27th, 2009 at 7:00PM as part of the 2009 Winter/Spring Harlem in the Himalayas Series.

Henry Grimes - Bass
Marc Ribot- Guitar

Henry Grimes has played 58 concerts with the extraordinary Marc Ribot in the last five years in duo, trio, and quartet formations in 16 European countries (Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey) as well as New York City.

They have played the music of Albert Ayler and Django Reinhardt, reinvented jazz and blues standards, and created original music together. Grimes and Ribot can be heard on the Pi Recordings CD Spiritual Unity: Roy Campbell, Henry Grimes, Marc Ribot, Chad Taylor and a new trio CD is expected to appear shortly.

Having made his mark in the '50s and '60s performing with the great R&B and soul musicians of that era, Henry Grimes (acoustic bass, violin, spoken word) was ultimately drawn to jazz. But after playing, touring, and recording with many jazz greats of the time, from Benny Goodman to Charles Mingus, a trip to the West Coast to work with Al Jarreau and Jon Hendricks went awry, leaving Henry in Los Angeles at the end of the '6Os with a broken bass he couldn't pay to repair. He sold it for a small sum and faded away from the music world. Many years passed without a sound from Grimes, until he was discovered in 2002 by a social worker and fan in Los Angeles and was given a bass by William Parker.

After only a few weeks of ferocious woodshedding, Henry emerged from his room to begin playing concerts around Los Angeles and shortly afterwards he made a triumphant return to New York City to play in the 2003 Vision Festival. Since then, often working as a leader, he has played more than 3OO concerts in 23 countries and can be heard on more than 80 recordings.

Henry has also given a number of workshops and master classes on major campuses, released several new recordings, and made his professional debut on a second instrument (the violin) at the age of 7O. He has now published the first volume of his poetry Signs Along the Road, and has been creating illustrations to accompany his new recordings and publications. He has received many honors in recent years, including four Meet the Composer grants and a grant from the Acadia Foundation. Henry Grimes now lives and teaches in New York City.

Marc Ribot was born in Newark, New Jersey in 1954. As a teen, he played guitar in various garage bands while studying with his mentor, Haitian classical guitarist and composer Frantz Casseus. After moving to New York City in 1978, Ribot was a member of the soul/punk group Realtones, and from 1984 - 1989, of John Lurie's Lounge Lizards.

He has continued to cross-stylistic lines by working with musicians as varied as Chuck Berry, Elvis Costello, Marianne Faithful, Caetano Veloso, and Laurie Anderson. Ribot frequently collaborates with producer T Bone Burnett, most recently on Alison Krauss and Robert Plant's grammy award winning Raising Sand and regularly works with composer John Zorn.

Ribot's own recording projects have included the bands Rootless Cosmopolitans (Island Antilles), Shrek (Tzadik), and Los Cubanos Postizos (Atlantic). Marc's solo recordings include Marc Ribot Plays The Complete Works of Frantz Casseus (Les Disques Du Crepuscule), The Book of Heads (Tzadik), Don't Blame Me (DIW), described as “a record filled with savory and unlikely amusements" by The Village Voice, Saints (Atlantic), and most recently Exercises in Futility (Tzadik).

Marc is currently touring with two bands, the Albert Ayler tribute project Spiritual Unity (Pi Recordings), featuring original Ayler bassist Henry Grimes, and Ceramic Dog, featuring bassist Shahzad Ismaily and drummer Ches Smith. Ceramic Dog will release their debut album Party Intellectuals this May on Pi Recordings in the North America and Enja in Europe and Japan.
