An African Legacy: The 29th Annual John Coltrane Memorial Concert

The 29th Annual John Coltrane Memorial Concert (JCMC) celebrates the 80th birthday of the great master musician and the 20th year of the JCMC at Northeastern University.

The theme of this year's concert is “An African Legacy." This year the JCMC ensemble will return joined with featured guests, The Art of Black Dance and Music (ABDM) under the direction of Dr. De Ama Battle. Together they will offer a unique portrayal of the Black continuum from Africa through the Caribbean to the USA.

The ABDM has served New England, the nation and the world for the past thirty years as one of the most prestigious ensembles dedicated to performing, preserving and promulgating the art of Black dance and music.

This year's JCMC will continue its legacy of featuring some of the finest musicians of our time. The JCMC Ensemble includes: Carl Atkins, Leonard Brown, Sa Davis, Donal Fox, Tim Ingles, Yoron Israel, Bill Lowe, Ron Madhi, Jason Palmer, Bill Pierce, George W. Russell, Jr., Syd Smart, Stan Strickland, Igmar Thomas, and Gary Valente.

Eric Jackson, of WGBH's “Eric in the Evening," will serve as host for this treasured event.

Additionally, a photographic exhibit celebrating twenty years at Northeastern will be on display during the two weeks leading up to the show in Northeastern's Snell Library, Ryder Hall, and the Curry Student Center. Additionally, part of the exhibit will be on display in the lobby of Blackman Theatre on the night of the show.

John Coltrane (1926-1967) is one of the most influential musicians of all time. His musical career was marked with majestic thinking, numerous innovations and contributions to creative improvisational music, and conscious incorporation of spiritual influences in his musical compositions and performances. Coltrane's large body of work and his musical and spiritual legacy continues to influence musicians and listeners worldwide.

“An African Legacy: The 29th Annual John Coltrane Memorial Concert" will be held at Northeastern University's Blackman Theatre, 360 Huntington Avenue on Saturday, September 23rd at 8pm. Ticket prices are $20 for General Public, $10 for NU faculty & staff, seniors and WGBH members and $5 for NU students and go on sale September 1st.
