Since arriving on the jazz scene in the early 1980s, Ms. Carrington has established herself as one of the most consistently inventive jazz drummers playing today. From her experience working with musicians like Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Branford Marsalis, Pat Metheny, George Coleman, Stan Getz, Lester Bowie, Pharoah Sanders, Cassandra Wilson, Dianne Reeves, and David Sanborn, she has developed a wide-ranging style and an ability to play well in many modern idioms. She cites one of jazz's most versatile living drummers as her main influence: “Jack DeJohnette is my biggest inspiration in the creative department," she said from her home in California. “He's just so open artistically. He has become a mentor to me and has helped me immensely in my personal growth." In her music, Ms. Carrington tries to evoke the spirit of the many great jazz musicians who have come before her, hence the title of her latest release Jazz is a Spirit (ACT Music, 2002). “The drum dictates the pulse of the jazz group," she opined. “The swing element has been extremely strong in jazz and the drum is essential to creating that feeling." Tim Earle of Rhythm Magazine observed about Carrington, “[N]ot only does she respectfully represent the history of jazz drumming...she is also one of the finest contemporary jazz drummers on the scene today."
