On April 12th, the Hammond Residential GMAC Real Estate Performing Arts Series will present the Taylor Ho Bynum Sextet at the Boston Center for the Arts. Led by New York- based cornetist/composer Taylor Ho Bynum, a Boston native, the group is touring in support of its debut CD, The Middle Picture (Firehouse 12 Records), coming April 3rd. The group features saxophonist/ clarinetist Matt Bauder, guitarists Mary Halvorson and Evan O'Reilly, violist/bassist Jessica Pavone and drummer Tomas Fujiwara.

Critics have called Bynum “a strong cornetist and serious-minded composer with experimental tendencies" (Nate Chinen, The New York Times) and “an agile and creative improviser who sounds like no one but himself" (Chris Kelsey, JazzTimes ). His sextet, which AllAboutJazz-New York's David R. Adler recently described as “virtuosity on its own terms," brings a trickster sensibility and third millennium flavor to the compositional and improvisational advancements made by pioneers such as Duke Ellington, Charles Ives and Chicago's Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM). The group's forthcoming CD, The Middle Picture, is a compilation of both live and studio performances from the past two years.

Along with his sextet, and a pared down trio version with Halvorson and Fujiwara, Bynum leads or co-leads a variety of other ensembles, in addition to a multitude of sideman work. He is a longtime member of such Boston-based ensembles as the Fully Celebrated Orchestra and Aardvark Jazz Orchestra, as well as Anthony Braxton's trio and sextet, Jason Kao Hwang's Edge, Miya Masaoka's Chironomy and the Cecil Taylor Orchestra among others. Along with The Middle Picture, he also appears on two other noteworthy early 2007 releases, a recording of duets with sextet drummer Tomas Fujiwara called True Events (482 Music) and 9 Compositions (Iridium) 2006 (Firehouse 12 Records), the Anthony Braxton 12+1tet's new 9-CD box set.
