State College (PA) Jazz Festival features Bucky Pizzarelli, Ken Peplowski and Ian Hendrickson-Smith

NEW YORK - The Second Annual State College Jazz Festival will kick off on Friday, July 21st with music beginning at 5:00pm at Central Parklet continuing through the evening and all day Saturday, July 22nd at the Allen Street Stage. New York-based jazz vocalist Catherine Dupuis returns to her hometown to produce the SCJF, involving some of the best jazz talent in the centre region together with nationally-acclaimed jazz stars.

Local artists slated to perform at SCJF'06 are The Valley Jazz Orchestra, The Friends Band, the Jazz Monsters, the [Rick] Hirschtet and the Grammy Award-winning and J@LC “Essential Ellington" finalist State College Area High School Jazz Band. Also playing SCJF'06 is BC and the Blues Crew, who'll deliver their special brand of blues on Saturday at 4:00pm.

Many more local musicians will be performing in venues all over downtown State College, including the All-American Alehouse and Grill, the Allen Street Grill, Bar Bleu, Beulah's, Caf 210 West, the Deli, Tony's Big Easy, Zeno's and Zola's Bistro.

SCJF'06 special guests on Saturday evening July 22nd at the Allen Street Stage are the Russ Kassoff Trio, with Russ Kassoff (piano), Martin Wind (bass) and Tim Horner (drums), legendary guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli and internationally acclaimed clarinetist Ken Peplowski. The Ian Hendrickson-Smith Quintet (State High '92) performs two late sets on Saturday July 22nd at Zola's Bistro. Ian will also be featured with the SCAHS Jazz Band on Friday at 5:00pm. Hometown singer Catherine Dupuis (State High '76) appears Friday, July 21st at 6:30pm with The Friends Band, led by Joe Alessandro (alto sax) and Don Keat (bari sax), and she will sing a few tunes with the Russ Kassoff Trio on Saturday evening. Admission to outdoor venues for SCJF'06 is FREE. Festival volunteers will pass the hat for donations during the event. Festival performers' recordings will be available for purchase. SCJF '06 benefits the Extracurricular Endowment Fund of the State College Area School District. Held at the Centre County Community Foundation, Inc., this fund provides monies to over 75 middle and high school extracurricular clubs, projects and activities ranging from performing and visual arts to language, yearbook and debate to government, social awareness and diversity.
