The seminal Downtown supergroup Spanish Fly will kick off their 2006 concert season with a very special 2-night appearance at The Bowery Poetry Club on February 18th and 19th.

On Saturday , Feb 18th Steven Bernstein (slide trumpet, valve trumpet), Marcus Rojas (tuba, vox , perc) and Tronzo (slide and prepared guitar) will be joined by Ben Perowsky (drums, percussion) for a night of absolute Fly madness, including new music from their Lester Bowie Tribute premiered in August 2005 in NYC.

On Sunday, Feb 19th, the evening begins with two rare back-to-back solo performances by Rojas and Tronzo, followed by a set with FlyMob: Spanish Fly meets Sex Mob, which also includes Briggan Kraus, Kenny Wollesen and Tony Scher.

Spanish Fly, one of the early leaders of New York's “Downtown" music scene, has long been performing and touring nationally and internationally. Creating daring and surprising music with their unique instrumentation, they back up brave compositional ideas with fearless playing and a desire to expand the realm of not just jazz, but all music.

“As much as any other unit in modern music, this trio defies genres (is it jazz, rock, blues, pop, or free improv?) as well as gravity." ~ Derk Richardson, San Francisco Bay Guardian

“Beautifully shaded music, asking questions instead of making declarations." ~ Peter Watrous, New York Times
