CHARLIE CHRISTIAN - “The Genius Of The Electric Guitar" (Columbia Legacy Jazz) - IN STORES SEPT. 24.

4-CD boxed set from the legendary '30s guitarist. Features 27 tracks previously unissued in the U.S.! Charlie Christian was to the guitar what Robert Johnson was to the blues. Both were figures shrouded in myth, urban legend and brilliance ... geniuses who were with us only briefly and left eternal legacies. Charlie Christian singlehandedly created the language of the electric guitar which flowed into such giants as Les Paul, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and essentially any guitarist to follow. He came from Oklahoma, was discovered by the legendary John Hammond, recorded for only two years, and died of tuberculosis at the age of 25. Yet his legacy is eternal. This boxed set captures the beginning -- the moment when Charlie's star was shining its brightest during sessions he recorded with Benny Goodman; when he was spinning line after line of golden guitar, playing alongside the greats, and creating music for the ages. This boxed set will feature a foreward by Les Paul, comprehensive liner notes by Christian biographer Peter Broadbent, and a wealth of testimonials from such artists as Walter Becker, George Benson, Duke Robillard, Brian Setzer, Joe Satriani, John Scofield, Jimmie Vaughan, Vernon Reid, Warren Haynes, Bill Frisell, Derek Trucks, and others.

HERBIE HANCOCK - “The Herbie Hancock Box" (Columbia Legacy Jazz) - IN STORES OCT. 1.

This 4-CD, 39-track deluxe boxed set is the definitive overview of Herbie's Columbia years. DISCS 1 & 2 focus on Herbie's acoustic material from 1976 until 1981, much of which has only been previously available in Japan. Highlights include a significant portion of music recorded by the sugergroup VSOP (with an unissued version of Freddie Hubbard's classic “Red Clay"). DISC 3 presents Herbie as a composer of truly “contemporary" music, and during this time his patented silky, funky Fender Rhodes sound became the most recognizable and widely emulated eclectric piano sound in jazz. DISC 4 reflects Herbie's duality of crossover popularity, and much of this disc focuses on the trends that Herbie started and are now firmly part of today's youth culture. Herbie has written extensive liner notes and recollections for this landmark boxed set.

WEATHER REPORT - “Live & Unreleased" (Columbia Legacy Jazz) - IN STORES OCT. 1.

The first official new release from Weather Report in 20 years! Two complete discs of unissued material! This set spans the classic years 1975-1983 and captures all of the great Weather Report lineups. Produced in collaboration with Weather Report co-founder Joe Zawinul. This set is like following a fantastic world tour of a supergroup!
