Skype Gives Up on Windows Mobile App

Making free Skype calls on a cell phone without using up minutes is certainly appealing. But the reality hasn't always lived up to the promise. Nowhere has this been more true than with the Windows Mobile version of Skype--which we found in two separate reviews to be, shall we say, less than desirable.

It turns out Skype has finally given up; the company announced that it will no longer work on its Windows Mobile app, and has removed it from the site's download section along with Skype Lite. “This isn't a decision we've taken lightly, but the reason is simple. Neither of these apps offered a great Skype experience," the company said in a blog entry.

Skype said that it has become increasingly challenging to maintain the app's performance on such a wide range of Windows Mobile devices. Current users of the app--and I feel for you--can keep on using it, as Skype has no plans to disable any existing versions out there.
