The Hartford Jazz Society presents its free Monday Night Jazz in Bushnell Park series featuring noted pianist Larry Willis on Monday, July 18.
Willis, who made his recording debut as a teenager with Hartford jazz great Jackie McLean, has played with a who's who in jazz and even served a seven-year stint with Blood, Sweat & Tears. Over the years, he's been the pianist of choice for stylists ranging from Dizzy Gillespie and Stan Getz to Hugh Masekela and Shirley Horn, and he's performed on some 300 recordings.
As the opening act, guitarist Sinan Bakir, a Hartford favorite who's originally from Turkey, leads his quartet at 6 p.m. WWUH-FM (91.3) broadcasts the music live from the park. Rain site is Asylum Hill Congregational Church, 814 Asylum Ave. Information: hartfordjazzsociety.com or 860-242-6688.
