SFJAZZ Announces 27th Annual San Francisco Jazz Festival Artist Line-Up

Randall Kline, the Executive and Artistic Director of SFJAZZ—the leading non-profit jazz organization on the West Coast—today announced the complete artist line-up for the 27th Annual San Francisco Jazz Festival.

The Festival will begin with a celebration of Thelonious Monk’s Birthday with pianist Eric Reed on October 10. The season continues through November 21 and includes some of the most illustrious names in music, including: Jake Shimabukuro; Ornette Coleman; Bela Fleck, Zakir Hussain & Edgar Meyer; Ravi Shankar & Anoushka Shankar; Savion Glover; Esperanza Spalding; Milton Nascimento; Gal Costa; Keb’ Mo’ & Solomon Burke; Benny Goodman Centennial Salute with Eddie Daniels; Gonzalo Rubalcaba; Dee Dee Bridgewater; Melody Gardot; Henry Butler; Poncho Sanchez; Mark Murphy with Vinny Valentino; Cindy Blackman’s Another Lifetime; Alfredo Rodriguez; Nicholas Payton & Don Byron; James Cotton with Hubert Sumlin; Marco Benevento; John Handy; Marc Cary; Omar Sosa; John Santos; Giovanni Allevi; Trio 3; Sara Tavares; Pat Martino & Larry Goldings; Carolina Chocolate Drops; John Abercrombie and many more.



“There’s no shortage of inspiration at our 27th Annual Festival, with a roster of artists that ranges from unparalleled jazz masters like Ornette Coleman and John Abercrombie to vivid newcomers like Esperanza Spalding and Melody Gardot,” says Kline. “We seek to expand our horizons and yours, presenting artists from around the globe—including Gal Costa and Milton Nascimento from Brazil, Yasmin Levy (Israel), Sara Tavares (Portugal), Alfredo Rodriguez (Cuba), and Zakir Hussain (India) to name just a few. The sun goes down a little earlier in the fall—all the better to tuck into a great venue and experience music that rewards your attention with pure beauty and exhilaration.”



Over the years, SFJAZZ has been known for its unique musical and thematic presentations from around the world. This Festival is no exception with offerings that include the Benny Goodman Centennial Salute with Eddie Daniels and Jim Rothermel (10/21), Jake Shimabukuro, solo at Davies Symphony Hall (10/21), Cindy Blackman’s Another Lifetime (a Tribute to Tony Williams on 10/28), Ravi Shankar & Anoushka Shankar (10/29), Nicholas Payton & Don Byron at Grace Cathedral (10/30), a Halloween Dance Party with Marco Benevento (10/31), “Backyard Alchemy” with Jess Diaz, Scott Amendola & Jaz Sawyer (11/4), “Hammond B-3 Organ Summit” with the Pat Martino Quartet (featuring Tony Monaco) & Larry Goldings (11/6), and “Double Barrel Blues Bash” with Keb’ Mo’ and Solomon Burke, at the Paramount Theatre in Oakland (11/21).





The leading edge of jazz innovation will be presented with Trio 3: Oliver Lake, Reggie Workman & Andrew Cyrille (11/4), John Abercrombie with Mark Feldman, Drew Gress & Joey Baron (11/8) and one of the true icons of jazz, Ornette Coleman (11/8).



Vocalists from around the world will make special appearances including Brazilians Gal Costa (10/25) and Milton Nascimento (11/7), plus Israeli singer/songwriter Yasmin Levy (10/29) and Portuguese vocalist Sara Tavares (11/6).



Always on the lookout for new talent, this Festival presents up-and-coming artists on the national and international scene including ukulele master Jake Shimabukuro (10/21), vocalist Melody Gardot (10/23), Cuban pianist Alfredo Rodriguez (10/25), and bassist/vocalist Esperanza Spalding (11/5).



Each fall, SFJAZZ honors a member of our community who has played a vital role in preserving the traditions and fostering the growth of jazz in the Bay Area. The 2008 honoree, legendary saxophonist John Handy, exemplifies everything the Beacon award stands for. He will lead his own group with special guests at the SFJAZZ Beacon Award concert on November 1 at Herbst Theatre.
