Launched in 2004 by SFJAZZ, the SFJAZZ Collective is distinguished not just by degree, but diversity of talent: each member is a celebrated instrumentalist; an outstanding composer and arranger; and most are also among today’s most lauded band leaders. Given the extraordinary talent assembled in the SFJAZZ Collective, it is tempting, on first glance, to think of this ensemble as an “all-star” band. But as the “Collective” portion of the group’s name suggests, these exceptional artists have come together in pursuit of a larger purpose—namely, the celebration of jazz as a constantly evolving, ever-relevant, quintessentially modern art form. According to jazz journalist Don Heckman in the liner notes, “Their performance, at its best, thoroughly [reflects] the SFJAZZ organization’s admirable desire to embrace the full gamut of the jazz experience.”
The SFJAZZ Collective honors and interprets the music of jazz masters. Their repertoire has focused on the music of Ornette Coleman (2004), John Coltrane (2005), Thelonious Monk (2006), Herbie Hancock (2007), Wayne Shorter (2008) and now McCoy Tyner (2009). As part of their annual commission from SFJAZZ, each Collective member is also challenged to create original music for the group.
The Collective’s 2009 personnel strikes a perfect balance among founding members and multi-year veterans. The front line includes two past DownBeat “Artist of the Year” honorees, saxophonist Joe Lovano and trumpeter Dave Douglas, each a member since 2007; MacArthur “Genius Grant” winner, three-time DownBeat “#1 Rising Star Alto Saxophonist” and founding member Miguel Zenn; and, since 2008, trombonist Robin Eubanks, a two-time DownBeat “Trombonist of the Year.” The incendiary rhythm section boasts founding member Renee Rosnes on piano plus two more Collective veterans: bassist Matt Penman, one of the most in-demand sidemen on the international scene; and drummer Eric Harland, famed for his work with Charles Lloyd, McCoy Tyner, and many other jazz legends.
These recordings were selected from live performances during the SFJAZZ Collective’s 2009 North American tour at venues including Metropolis Theatre, Montreal, Canada; Palais Montcalm, Qubec, Canada; Dominion-Chalmers United Church, Ottawa, Canada; Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, Philadelphia, PA; Allen Room, Jazz at Lincoln Center, New York, NY; The Egg, Albany, NY; The Dakota, Minneapolis, MN; Pick-Staiger Concert Hall, Northwestern University, Evanston, IL; Catalina Jazz Club, Los Angeles, CA; Chan Centre for the Performing Arts, Vancouver, Canada; The Seasons Performance Center, Yakima, WA; The John G.
