Just two albums into his recording career and Mike Stockbridge is solidifying his reputation as one of the East Coast's most promising jazz guitarists. Stockbridge's second effort, Ama, jolts the imagination with his inventive and compelling playing. Stockbridge released his self-titled debut in 2009; two years later, Ama finds Stockbridge gaining confidence and focus, creating a work of bold experimentation and stunning precision.

Stockbridge's luminescent guitars on “One for Charlie" opens the record to mesmerizing effect. Duane Edwards' throbbing double bass adds depth and tension to the groove. Among the album's highlights is “Intuition," in which David Wells' tenor saxophone swirls with color and personality, building up emotion for Stockbridge's sizzling solo.

The chemistry between Stockbridge and his fellow musicians is a key to Ama's success. Their presence isn't to simply provide ambience; rather, they actually work with Stockbridge, enabling the songs to expand in scope and feel. On “Intuition," Wells' sax and Stockbridge's guitar are united in melody; they jam like planets revolving around the sun. On “By George," everyone is given the opportunity to dazzle. Shawn Boissonneault's slamming percussion and Wells' relentless, pounding bass echo Stockbridge's own fiery performance. It's a thriller.

Stockbridge has his cinematic moments, too. “Pas Mal" is shrouded in nighttime moodiness. Stockbridge's slow, steady playing paints vivid images of a city in moonlight. Its true origin is something only Stockbridge will know but interpretation is among the joys provided by instrumental music, especially when it's as evocative as this.

In Spanish, Ama means “lady of the house," and Stockbridge dedicates the record to the memory of his mother. In addition, a portion of the sales from Ama is being donated to Diabetes, Alzheimer's, and dementia research.
