Seattle Jazz Composers' Ensemble
J&J Music and the Seattle Jazz Composers’ Ensemble are proud to present a tribute concert to the seminal Miles Davis album “Birth of the Cool”. The concert and live taping will take place at Lucid Jazz Lounge on August 21, 2009 and will feature a 9-piece ensemble with the original instrumentation. The SJCE is lead by directors Nate Omdal and Michael Owcharuk, and features some of Seattle’s finest musicians: Cynthia Mullis (alto sax), Brian Bermudez (bari sax), Jason Parker (trumpet), Elijah Clark (trombone), Cara Sawyer (French horn), Nelson Bell (tuba), Michael Owcharuk (piano), Nate Omdal (bass) and Cody Rahn (drums).

The Ensemble will perform 10 of the original arrangements from the 1949/1950 recordings as well as newly commissioned works by Seattle composers Nate Omdal, Michael Owcharuk, Jim Knodle, Michael Catts, Nelson Bell and Portland composer Andrew Oliver. Many of these same musicians and composers participated in Owcharuk’s successful Slava! – Ukrainian Carols and New Christmas Music concert earlier this year. This is the formal debut of the SJCE, an ensemble devoted to presenting creative and new music by Pacific Northwest composers and beyond.

The performance will be recorded and released on the newly formed Lucid Live Records. LLR was created to document the amazing music happening at the Seattle club, and made it’s debut this month with the release of Reservoir Cats: Spirit of Mingus. The SJCE CD will be release this fall.

Show time is 9:30pm. Lucid Jazz Lounge is located at 5241 University Ave., Seattle. There is no cover charge.
