March 8, 2006: Grammy nominated producer Bud Spangler, host of KCSM's Sunday Night Suites, has this to say about the music of saxophonist Sarah Manning: “After more than 40 years of both performing and presenting jazz, it's very unusual and a genuine treat to hear music that's truly unique." On March 12th at 8PM PST, he will be presenting a performance of new material by Manning recorded at her Yoshi's debut last November. Featuring her quartet with pianist Randy Porter, bassist John Wiitala and drummer Akira Tana, the material from the Yoshi's set will also be released on ArtistShare in mid-April as Manning's second album, Live at Yoshi's: Two Rooms Same Door.

“Sunday Night Suites", with its promotion of live jazz music - as it happened in the moment, without any of the “fixing" that is so common these days in the studio - is a fitting outlet for Sarah Manning's philosophy and creative approach. Originally from New England, Manning found her way to the West Coast in 2002 on a quest to develop her own voice as an artist. Since her arrival, Manning has produced two albums as a composer and bandleader and performed at top venues from Yoshi's in Oakland to the Kuumbwa Jazz Center in Santa Cruz. Her first release, House on Eddy Street (2004), is a critically acclaimed debut album that has been played on radio stations across the country and was named number five in KCSM DJ Michael Burman's top ten list for the year. In the liner notes, Nat Hentoff commented, “Manning plays - and writes - in what is unmistakably her own voice."

Manning's upcoming release on ArtistShare continues the interactive relationship with fans she has been developing through her website in the lead up to the Yoshi's performance. Participants can share in her experience composing the seven new tunes for the show through photo galleries, downloadable sheet music, essays, audio clips, interviews and more. An updated website design and opportunities to participate in her latest musical plot will launch in conjunction with the new album.

On November 21, 2005, Manning's quartet attacked her angular and unusual compositions with a spirited inventiveness, creating a playful and intense dialogue that showcases each individual personality. Tune into KCSM's “Sunday Night Suites" at 8PM PST March 12th for the first opportunity to hear the results. Tune in March 19th at the same time for two more selections from the performance.
