Saxophonist Rob Scheps Receives Composition Fellowships

Saxophonist Rob Scheps ( Gil Evans Band,Al Grey, George Russell) has been awarded three separate fellowships in Music composition for 2003.

The fellowships will take the form of multi -week residencies at Centrum in Port Townsend, Washington ; The Hambidge Center for the Arts in Rabun Gap,Georgia where he is the recipient of the Nellie Mae Rowe Scholarship; and The Ucross Foundation in northern Wyoming.

Scheps will compose new music for his 16 piece big band , based in Portland, Oregon.

Recently, Scheps has performed with Eddie Henderson, Hadley Caliman, Chuck Israels, Lou Rawls, Linda Ronstadt,The Oregon Symphony, Gary Smulyan ,Django Bates, Jim Black, Dave Douglas and Buell Neidlinger.

In 2002, Scheps toured Kansas City, Chicago,Seattle, Vancouver,Eugene,Or.,Bellingham,Wa. and Banff,Canada.

At Banff , he founded the Herbie Nichols Ensemble & the Kinda Big Band; and the PSU Saxophone Quartet at Portland State University.
