The huge-toned saxophonist Dave Wilson first received press attention for his traditional/New Orleans ensemble the Canal Street Hot 6, and has carried through with his admiration for that genre with today's Dave Wilson's Rampart Street Ramblers, which continues to tour. His credentials as a modern jazz player are also extensive. As a member of trumpeter Dave Stahl's big bands, Wilson played alongside giants like Wynton Marsalis, Tom Harrell and Steve Smith. A good deal of his attention these days is focused on his contemporary group, the Dave Wilson Quartet, an ensemble that has recorded three CDs. His latest effort, Spiral received 3 1/2 stars from DownBeat magazine and substantial national radio airplay.
