RUBIN MUSEUM OF ART & THE JAZZ MUSEUM IN HARLEM PRESENT
A jazz concert

FRIDAY, APRIL 27
7:00 PM

HARLEM IN THE HIMALAYAS $15 IN ADVANCE; $20 DAY OF THE EVENT
Roswell Rudd and David Oquendo

Roswell Rudd, trombone, and David Oquendo, electric and acoustic guitar, team up on some of their personal favorites as well as some originals and songs rooted in the Afro-Cuban tradition.

RUBIN MUSEUM OF ART
150 WEST 17 STREET, NEW YORK CITY
212.620.5000 x344

The music they team up on are by some of their personal favorites: composers Ernesto Lacuono ("Siboney"), Bene More ("Mucho Corazon"), Neil Young ("This Old Trombone"), Stevie Wonder ("You Are the Sunshine of My Life"), Luis Bonfa ("Manha de Carnaval") , Josef Myrow ("Autumn Nocturne") , Dizzy Gillespie ("Manteca"), as well as some originals and songs rooted in the Afro-Cuban tradition. Given the context of the concert in a museum dedicated to Himalayan art, they are giving Led Zeppelin's “Stairway to Heaven" a particular high altitude spin.

The repertory consists of familiar songs that have a greater than average amount of musical grist which makes them especially attractive to musicians who improvise.

The arrangements are colorful, unusual and memorable.

“We have a multi-faceted approach to the ways of combining the trombone and guitar that is leading us into new duet waters," says Rudd.

In addition, Rudd is a scatter; Oquendo is a singer and a master of mouth percussion. These folkloric resources add a unique dimension and are not often heard. Given the superb acoustics of the Museum's performance space, Oquendo will alternate electric with unamplified acoustic guitar.

Rudd and Oquendo are ideal musical companions and complementary musical personalities. This concert marks the third at the Rubin Museum of Art for Rudd; it is Oquendo's debut.
