Rick Margitza emerged from the den of “young lions" in the late 80s. Margitza's most hard-won praise followed a sideman stint with Miles Davis, who simply called him “a great tenor player" and featured him on his recording, Amandla. Margitza attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, and Loyola University in New Orleans, where he lived and played for four years. Margitza toured with Maynard Ferguson and also Flora Purim and Airto before moving to New York in 1988. Margitza, who is a prolific and inventive composer, released his first solo album on Blue Note. His recent CD on Palmetto Records, Memento, features the all-star crew of Mulgrew Miller, labelmate Scott Colley and Brian Blade.

He cant stop thinking about how to revolutionize whether its on his bass, in his composing or in jazz itself. With a reputation as one of the most original voices in modern jazz, he is a strong organizational force on the New York City music scene and an advocate for artist empowerment. When he was 25, he established the Jazz Composers Collective, a non-profit, musician-run organization dedicated to fostering the development, performance, and documentation of new works. This March it celebrates its 11th anniversary. He currently acts as its artistic director, overseeing concert programming, special events and teaching projects among other things. A Palmetto Records artist, Allison is an extraordinary bassist and composer. His recent Palmetto CD, Peace Pipe, was named to many national Best of 2002 lists including to the Top 10 of the New York Times.
