An event celebrating the musical legacy of Robert Knatt will be held Saturday, June 7 at Seattle's Town Hall, 1119 8th Ave. The formal program begins at 7 p.m.; doors open at 5 p.m.
Knatt is retiring from teaching this year. He has been the jazz band and concert band teacher at Seattle's Washington Middle School since 1991. His bands have been perennial winners at major festivals in the Northwest and throughout the country; his students have provided the core for the Garfield High School program, which is recognized internationally as one of the best high school jazz bands.
Knatt was the first middle school teacher ever recognized with an Achievement Award for Jazz Education from the national jazz magazine Down Beat. He also has received numerous local and state awards for teaching excellence.
The Town Hall program includes performances by the Washington Middle School Jazz Band and alumni bands from throughout Knatt's 36-year career. Reservations can be made at BrownPaperTickets.com/event/35040. The suggested donation is $10 per person; children under 10 are free. Food is available for purchase from 5 to7 p.m.
