Saxophonist and arranger Tommy Gryce was born in Pensacola, Florida, and during the Great Depression, Tommy and his famous brother Gigi Gryce were schooled in music as children by a musician from the Andy Kirk band through the WPA, a New Deal program. Eventually, Gryce's talent took him to Wilberforce University in Ohio and ultimately, he received his MA from Columbia University in NYC while playing with the likes of Betty Carter, Benny Golson, Melba Liston, Ben Riley and Donald Byrd. Known throughout the Delaware Valley area as one of the premier music teachers, Gryce taught at Trenton High School and Westminster College, and worked as a curriculum consultant for many educational institutions. This appearance at the Willingboro Library, where Gryce will be accompanied by Dan Kostelnik-Hammond B3 organ and drummer Jim Miller, will be a rare one that you will not want to miss!
The Jazz Bridge Neighborhood Concerts Series is partially funded by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, Philadelphia Jazz Project, Philadelphia Fund for Jazz Legacy and Innovation of the Philadelphia Foundation, and Painted Bride Arts Center. Jazz Bridge, a 501C public charity that assists area jazz and blues musicians in crisis, is sponsoring this performance in Willingboro, as well as 40 other events this season on five area stages in the Greater Delaware Valley.
