Dog Day
Estelle Woodward / Jeff Arnal

Long time collaborators Estelle Woodward and Jeff Arnal present DOG DAY, an improvisational score for percussion and movement. Arnal and Woodward began working together in 1999 while studying at Bennington College. The duo shares a dynamic and vocabulary that has been cultivated over time, and is rooted in the performance of improvisation. Their work is an ongoing experiment in the synthesis of impulse and non-linear structure that evolves out of the purity of music and dance existing in a space together.

“One of the best improv trio dates I've heard in recent memory."
Bruce Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery, NYC

“ This New York City-based jazz/improvising trio emerges as a cohesive unit, meshing superior technical ability with extreme imaginative powers."
Glenn Astarita

RARA AVIS joins the imaginative and focused talents of Jeff Arnal, Gordon Beeferman, and Seth Misterka. The trio's debut album, released in January 2004 on Generate Records, is a highly structured but entirely improvised tour de force. The music traverses a rich musical territory from fierce and highly rhythmic complexity to evocative long-lined lyricism. Rara Avis' striking and contemporary sound comes out of the fertile and inspiring avant-garde traditions of free jazz and contemporary classical composition. Today's performance is the first with guitarist Anders Nilsson and will include material from their new studio project.
