Mermans Kenkosenki of Playing for Change will be calling in to the web based jazz show Reeds and Deeds II (Sundays from 6-8 pm on www.wecb.fm) tomorrow night, November 7, at 6:30!

You may be familiar with the 'Stand By Me' video that circulated around the web and on YouTube. It's had around 30 million views! Mermans Kenkosenki is part of the Playing for Change band that is currently on tour and they'll be appearing in Boston on the 17th of November at Symphony Hall.

Mermans Kenkosenki:

Upon his arrival to South Africa from Congo in 1998, Mermans joined the Young Bakuba Band as a drummer and bass guitarist. After a year in the band he found that his independence and musical style were being limited and so he branched out on his own as a solo artist in 1999. He was soon in high demand doing solo gigs at various Cape Town venues, however, he decided that he preferred a band set-up and assembled what is now a highly regarded multi-cultural band, Afro Fiesta.

“While of course Playing for Change isn't a “jazz" group, it goes without saying that the goals of Playing for Change parallels the goals of jazz music. One of the first things I thought of upon hearing about this was the International Association of Schools of Jazz that my dad, Dave Liebman, began about twenty years ago.

The aim of the organization is to bring together musicians from all over the world to meet and play together for a week in hopes that they will forge lasting musical relationships. Playing for Change brings together musicians from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Amsterdam, New Orleans, Ghana, and Israel, among others- similar to the IASJ. This type of arrangement is outstanding and I'm very excited to feature this on the show tomorrow." —Lydia Liebman, host of Reeds and Deeds II.
