Following the success of his Grammy Award-winning Blue Note recording, Supernova (2001), pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba will return to center-stage with the September 28th release of Paseo, after a three-year recording hiatus.
Recorded with an all-Cuban quartet, (veteran drummer Ignacio Berroa, electric bass player Jose Armando Gola; and soprano, alto, and tenor saxophonist Luis Felipe Lamoglia) Paseo represents Rubalcaba's decision to approach Cuban musical traditions from a more focused but relaxed perspective. Comprised of all original compositions, the CD also includes reinterpretations of previously recorded works from his earlier Blue Note recordings, Rapsodia (1992) and Antiguo (1998).
Rubalcaba approaches some of his older works with a fresh perspective, with more experience, and in the hands of new musicians. The result is newer versions enhanced by Rubalcaba's technical maturity and surprising interplay among the new members.
The CD promises to be an intriguing paseo (walk) through the Cuban-born pianist
