"Let your talent hit the rafters...get yourself to Clinic Crafters." - Jim Hall

From the audience, a great performance comes across like a seamless miracle. If you could get the performer's commentary on what he does, though, you'd learn that each combines theory, technique and tricks of the trade with his talent in a totally individual way - and that's what students and fans have the opportunity to discover in an intimate series of workshops scheduled at Blue Note, 131 West 3rd Street downtown Manhattan on Saturdays from 2 pm until 4 pm. For resevations call (212) 475-8592 or visit www.cliniccrafters.com

Our series continues on Saturday, April 2 with percussion legend Candido Camero who, without doubt, belongs in the front rank of percussionists on the scene today. An eloquent and informative clinician, Candido is known as the father of the technique of coordinated independence. He also pioneered the use of two and later three congas, where in past most percussionists were content playing a single drum.

Candido's long list of recorded work includes sessions with Dizzy Gillespie, Lena Horne, Billy Taylor, Buddy Rich, Art Blakey, Count Basie, Elvin Jones, George Shearing, Lionel Hampton, Stan Getz, Wes Montgomery, Woody Herman, Doc Severinson, Marian McPartland, Lalo Schifrin. Mongo Santamaria, Tito Puente, Charlie Parker, and Antonio Carlos Jobim ' just to name a few. Surely this will be a workshop to remember! Candido has a brilliant and spiritual approach to music and has endorsed LP drums since 1977. He explains, “The sounds are pure and clear and they inspire my feelings and my soul."

At a typical workshop, the visiting artist performs for a bit, discusses the theory and technique in his performance, invites a member of the audience to play and offers feedback and help with style and execution. Throughout, he answers questions from workshop participants. Because of the access and interchange available in the sessions, students “have a treasure in this series," says critic Gary Giddins.
