Among the various iPad apps that are making their debut Friday is Pandora, which has optimized its popular Internet radio iPhone app for Apple's tablet.

“When we started thinking about how to bring Pandora to the iPad, my thought process was, what are people really going to do with a device like this that has this big screen?" Pandora chief technology officer Tom Conrad said in a phone interview. “It felt to me like it's going to be a device that's largely about entertaining yourself, sitting on the couch, watching a movie, or playing a game."

The iPad app will work much like the Pandora iPhone app, though the iPad's larger interface provides more real estate for band information and cover art, Conrad said.

“Pandora on the PC has always been this kind of way for people to keep themselves company at work, [while] Pandora on your mobile phone [is] a great way to get Pandora on-the-go, put it in the car, take it to the gym," he said. “But we've never really had a thing where you could just kick back on the couch and explore the music universe, maybe sit next to somebody and pass it back and forth as you listen."

Sign into the Pandora app as you would on the Web. The app and the browser-based service are linked, and your existing stations will show up on the iPad. You can then create stations, rate songs, save bookmarks, and edit preferences.
