Cambridge, MA: On March 9th, Buenos Aires-born, Cambridge-based composer and pianist Pablo Ablanedo had launched a crowd-funding campaign on Kickstarter.com to help record and produce his third album with his group, the Pablo Ablanedo Octet. After releasing two records on the Barcelona-based Fresh Sound New Talent label, Ablanedo and his group have decided to record and release their new record, which will be called Recontradoble, independently. Ablanedo is asking his fans and friends to come and be part of making it a reality.

Ablanedo’s music has been noted for blending jazz and classical influences with the folk music of his native Argentina, including Tango.

Kickstarter.com, founded in April 2009, has quickly earned the right to call itself “the world’s largest funding platform for creative projects.” The website allows artists and innovators to reach out to potential backers all over the world. Backers get something in return through a system of pledges and rewards, and Kickstarter’s merchant partnership with Amazon.com makes it easy to pledge from anywhere in the world.

Ablanedo cites Kickstarter’s “all or nothing” funding policy as one of the reasons he chose the site. Each project sets a fundraising goal and a concrete window of time, and if the projected amount of money has not been raised by the end of that period, nobody pays anything. Kickstarter’s website explains the logic behind this policy succinctly: “it protects everyone involved.”

Ablanedo’s goal for Recontradoble is to raise $7,000 in 58 days, from March 9th until May 6th. If the goal is reached, the money will go towards renting a studio space, paying the musicians who make up his Octet, hiring an audio engineer, mixing, mastering, and CD post-production. The OCTETo will support the campaign with two upcoming concerts at the Lily Pad on March 3rd (8 PM) and the Regattabar on May 1st (7:30 PM).

Over the past few years, the Pablo Ablanedo Octet has been performing many of the pieces that will be on Recontradoble at jazz clubs around the Boston area, including Ryle’s Jazz Club, the Regatta Bar, and the Lily Pad, as well as at the Beantown Jazz Festival 2011 and the Ottawa Jazz Festival. Ablanedo’s first two albums with the group, From Down There (2001) and Gabriel Alegria (2003), were well received in the US and abroad, earning four and four-and-a-half stars, respectively, in Down Beat Magazine.

On this new record, which takes its name from an Argentinean scale, Ablanedo and the musicians of the Octet explore the complex relationship between written composition and improvisation, bringing the two together into a cohesive whole.
