JazzWorks will hold its second annual fundraiser, JazzWorksGala Thursday, May 6 at Arts Court 7:00 pm to midnight. The fundraiser features Montreal-based saxophonist Rmi Bolduc, Toronto jazz vocalist Julie Michels, and versatile Toronto jazz guitarist Kevin Barrett - all members of the JazzWorks faculty - plus a stellar list of JazzWorks jazz camp alumni for an evening of music, food and festivity.

One of the greatest alto sax players in Canada, Rmi Bolduc also teaches at McGill and Concordia universities. He composes and performs pieces infused with his own singular musical language and has collaborated with such prominent musicians as Kenny Werner, Seamus Blake, Lorraine Desmarais, Thom Gossage and Vic Vogel, who said of Remi that “he plays like the devil."

Toronto jazz critic Mark Miller, has described Julie Michel's voice as a “glorious holler" and says her duo with bassist George Koller is “one of Toronto's top jazz groups." Julie's jazz festival performances include work in Europe and the British Isles, along with Bridgeport and Glasgow festivals and the North Sea Jazz Festival. Active as a performer and teacher in Toronto, Julie has an enthusiastic following of students and fans in the Ottawa area.

Jazz guitarist Kevin Barrett has recorded and performed in Toronto (and previously Ottawa) for over 20 years. He has released two recordings with his own group, as well as “Live at Statler's" (2003) with Julie Michels. Kevin has performed and toured with a wide range of vocalists including Julie Michels, Lisa Lindo, David Wall, Lillian Allen, Cindy Church, Arlene Mantle and Big Rude Jake.

JazzWorks “campers" have made a big impression on the local jazz scene. Highlighted in five hours of music, they will include precocious high schoolers, sax whiz Daniel Ko and vocal sensation Jenna Glatt and 80-something tenor saxman Mortimer Katz. Local singers include composer/singer Shannon Eddy Smith, Nicole Ratt and Rene Yoxon, all of whom have regular club gigs in Ottawa and Gatineau.

A special guest is pianist Peter Hum, well-known for his jazzblog.ca in the Ottawa Citizen, and from his collaborations with some of the best musicians in Ottawa, Toronto and Montreal. Other performers include Toronto pianist Tim Murray, Ottawa trumpeter Charley Gordon, guitarist Rob Martin, trombonist Jerry Heath, saxophonist Brian Asselin, drummers Greg Klowak and Scott Warren, bassists Adrian Steeves and Alrick Huebener. In true jazz camp fashion, the evening will be capped off by a free-wheeling jam session.

JazzWorksGala also serves up some tempting appetizers prepared by Chef Rob Mac Donald and Thyme and Again Creative Catering. Our silent auction offers up some “jazzy" items including dining and gift certificates, spa services, music items and fine artwork. Emcee for the evening is the well-known Ottawa actor Paul Rainville.

An Ottawa-based not-for profit jazz education organization, with 90 per cent of participants from the Ottawa region, JazzWorks began as a small artists' collaborative and has grown and thrived with the help of a group of dedicated Ottawa jazz supporters and musicians. For the past 17 years, JazzWorks has presented jazz educational activities such as the intensive three-day Summer Jazz Workshop and monthly jam sessions with local jazz musicians.
