Obama Taps Vivek Kundra as White House CIO

President Obama on Thursday named Vivek Kundra as the White House chief information officer (CIO).

Kundra has served as the chief technology officer (CTO) for Washington, D.C. since 2007, where he was charged with technology operations and strategy for 86 agencies. He also served as Virginia's assistant secretary of commerce and technology under Gov. Tim Kaine, who Obama recently named chairman of the Democratic National Committee.

“Vivek Kundra will bring a depth of experience in the technology arena and a commitment to lowering the cost of government operations to this position," Obama said in a statement. “I have directed him to work to ensure that we are using the spirit of American innovation and the power of technology to improve performance and lower the cost of government operations."

Obama said Kundra will also be working closely with the chief technology officer, a new federal position that the president has yet to fill.

Kundra “will play a key role in making sure our government is running in the most secure, open, and efficient way possible," Obama said.

Kundra has already been working on the Obama transition team. In a video posted to transition.gov earlier this year, Kundra and the tech team touted cloud computing and increased innovation.
