New York Jazz Academy, the fastest growing music school in New York City, announces open auditions for the NYJA Manattan Jazz Big Band. The Manhattan Jazz Big Band is open to adult intermediate-advanced level instrumentalists who are looking to play and learn in a big band setting. This is a weekly workshop that will meet for two hours in each session. About the Big Band

Repertoire is similar to that of a college big band, ranging from old-time classics to contemporary big band pieces. Instrumentation will include saxophones, trumpets, trumpets, rhythm section (guitar, piano, bass, drums) and is dependent upon those applying and auditioning for spots. Contact NYJA if you have more questions.

About the conductor

Saxophonist, composer and arranger Javier Arau had an early start with big bands, cutting his teeth as a teenager in big bands led by Dizzy Gillespie, Bill Berry, and Louie Bellson. Over the years, he studied and worked with some of the most acclaimed big band conductors in jazz, including George Russell, Gunther Schuller, Maria Schneider and more. Javier was a member of the BMI Jazz Composers Workshops, where he studied under Vanguard Orchestra director Jim McNeely, and he was a protege of acclaimed arranger and composer Bob Brookmeyer. Arau has conducted big bands and orchestras across the country. Currently the program director of New York Jazz Academy, Arau is an acclaimed big band composer in his own right, with several pieces published by UNC Jazz Press and four Down Beat musician awards to his credit.
