Saturday 3 March: Purcell Room, Southbank Centre, London

Saturday 28 April: Turner Sims Concert Hall, Southampton

Firebird is an engaging programme of new work exploring musical paths that converge at the crossroads of jazz and classical music. It's an exciting place where two musical revolutionaries—Igor Stravinsky and Charlie Parker—meet and cross swords utilising their distinctive armouries of rhythmic ingenuity and harmonic invention.

Firebird features a remodelled version of Stravinsky's Ebony Concerto (originally commissioned by jazz clarinetist, Woody Herman in 1946); the Musical Director, Peter Edwards' angular creation, Blues Ostinata along with his orchestration of British jazz composer, Steve Williamson's How High The Bird; composer/conductor, Binker Golding's rhythmically primeval, yet harmonically sophisticated Maenads Suite; and other captivating new works and re-works.

Brainchild of award-winning bassist and bandleader Gary Crosby, The Nu Civilisation Orchestra is London's newest and most diverse orchestra. Resident at Southbank Centre in the heart of the UK's capital city as part of the Tomorrow's Warriors At Southbank Centre weekend residency, the Orchestra is also proud to be a new Associate Artist at Turner Sims Concert Hall, Southampton.
