About Noah Haidu

Noah Haidu is one of New York's leading young jazz pianists. His playing and composing combine hip rhythms, harmonic sophistication, spontaneity, soul, and swing into a distinct approach that stands out from the crowd of today's young jazz artists. As a sideman Noah has played and/or recorded with Mike Stern, Ambrose Akinmusire, Duane Eubanks, Winard Harper, Curtis Lundy, Valery Ponomarev, and Essiet Essiet. His busy gigging schedule allows him to share the bandstand with an exciting group of musicians including Billy Hart, Jeremy Pelt, Curtis Lundy, Montez Coleman, Eric McPherson, Corcoran Holt, McClenty Hunter, and others. In addition he leads his own trio and quintet which sometimes features Pelt on Trumpet.

Noah is also a member of the cooperative group Native Soul. In this band he collaborates with drummer Steve Johns, saxophonist Peter Brainin, and bassist Marcus McLaurine. Their recently released CD Soul Step (Talking Drum/2011) shows off their exciting musical approach, combining hard-swinging New York jazz with elements of funk, Brazilian, gospel, and Afro-Cuban styles. Although acoustic piano is his main instrument, Noah enjoys experimenting with electronic keyboards and sounds, and has played opposite legendary artists like Chaka Khan and Larry Graham.

Born in Charlottesville, Virginia, Noah was exposed early on to all kinds of music: blues, classical, avant-garde, rock, and jazz. By the time he entered high school in Hopewell, New Jersey he was developing a keen interest in jazz and blues piano and composition. After graduating, he studied at the jazz program at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ. Around this time, Noah began performing on the local music scene, playing pick up gigs with jazz and R&B groups in New Jersey, Philadelphia, and Brooklyn. In Philly, the young pianist would sometimes sit with the legendary drummer Mickey Roker. Eager to begin working in the heart of the music scene, Noah soon moved to Brooklyn, New York. Since then he has devoted most of his time to performing and composing. His teachers have included Kenny Barron, Bruce Barth, David Hazeltine, and Barry Harris. He continues to absorb new musical ideas and concepts, and to be open to diverse influences. In addition to his busy performing schedule, he finds time to teach jazz piano students at his home in Brooklyn.
