has been playing acoustic and electric bass for more than half of his 30 years. He started playing electric bass in high school, mentored by Ricardo Jackson
, and took up the acoustic instrument during his first semester at Kutztown University. He eventually graduated Kutztown with a B.A. in Music Education, and later earned a Masters in Jazz Studies from Rutgers University. Along the way, he studied with giants such as Mike Richmond
, Victor Lewis
and Stanley Cowell
. His versatility in a wide range of styles, large, warm and soulful tone, and heavy, blues–tinged groove contributed to making Speaks a certifiably in-demand player, backing the likes of John Swana
, Jimmy Owens
, Scott Wendholt
and Rachel Z
, among many others.
