Beginning this April, New Haven's Firehouse 12 will begin issuing a mix of physical and digital-only recordings under the banner of its new label, Firehouse 12 Records. Co-founded by Firehouse 12's owner/resident recording engineer Nick Lloyd and acclaimed cornetist/composer Taylor Ho Bynum, the label was created to “capture creative music in its native environment." Its first two physical releases, scheduled for April 3rd, will be a nine-CD-plus-one-DVD box set documenting the Anthony Braxton 12+1tet's four-night stand at New York's Iridium Jazz Club in March 2006 and the debut release from Bynum's working sextet. The label also plans to release digital downloads of live performances recorded during its 2006 Fall Jazz Series.

Firehouse 12 has become a major part of New Haven's cultural renaissance since opening its doors in April 2005, quickly gaining a reputation as one of the premier recording studios and creative music venues on the East Coast. Its striking 1200-square foot studio, a 2006 Best Studio Design Project nominee for the prestigious Technical Excellence and Creativity (TEC) Awards, features world-class acoustic design by renowned acoustician John Storyk of Walters-Storyk Design Group. The studio doubles as an 80-seat public venue that has presented some of the most respected names in creative music. On December 1st, 2006, The Arts Council of Greater New Haven recognized Lloyd with a 2006 Arts Award for his “visionary restoration of Firehouse 12," adding, “New Haven will long be grateful for his realization of that revolutionary vision."
