Not too many male singers have a high C6, well at least not to be heard in public, but G. Thomas Allen's stratospheric range and pleasantly smooth tone is the next wave of sound in the modern jazz space. Native of Danville, VA, by way of Chicago
, where he is currently based and accessible to the jazz scene; whether it's jamming at Andy's Jazz Club
or sitting in at The Green Mill
with the trumpeter Pharez Whitted
or saxophonist Eric Schneider
—to name a few.
He's love for jazz started, back in undergraduate at Morgan State University, when he was selected to go to Paris
, France with Wynton Marsalis
' band as part of the singers that did the background work for All Rise (2002 Sony Classical Records). As former member of Darin Atwater's Soulful Symphony, known for their diverse repertoire, he started to take this approach into his own work; blending the styles of gospel, classical and jazz (formally known as post-bop"). His self-titled album is a musical journey that embodies the rich culture of Black music with the Western European Art form influence; offering a solidarity in sound that has the ability to cross-over and relatable to all audiences.
