Sometimes 'better late than never' really fits the bill and in the case of Consenting Adults, we might add that 'good things come to those who wait.'
—Chris Hovan, All About Jazz
For the first time ever on vinyl, we edited this beautiful Gatefold 2-LP set with High Quality 180 gram Audiophile Vinyl. Recorded at RPM Studio, New York City on December 26, 1994 and mastered for vinyl and lacquer cutting by the great Bernie Grundman Studios. This celebrated release will be available for the second drop of Record Store Day on July 17th.

Music writer and regular collaborator at Downbeat and Jazziz, Ted Panken, introduces this seminal Criss Cross album as being: “a snapshot of five elite young improvisers who will be among the movers and shakers of 21st Century jazz at the conclusion of their postgraduate education.” The particularity of this album lies in the coming together of the musicians at certain point in time as Ted Panken adds: “Though the M.T.B. ensemble was put together specifically for this session; all the players had been moving in overlapping circles for several years. The acronym represents the surnames of pianist Brad Mehldau, tenor saxophonist Mark Turner, and guitarist Peter Bernstein; their coequal partners are bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Leon Parker. “lt sounds great,” Mehldau enthuses, reflecting on the album at the end of 1999. “I am pleased and proud of it. lt sounds very different than how we all play now. But what’s cool is that it has a sound unto itself that’s not overly derivative of anything else. lt captured all of us when we were right at the beginning of developing our own voices.”

Retrospectively, Downbeat journalist concludes: “Consenting Adults reflects the rooted-yet-adventurous nature of the musicians who comprise this quintet called M.T.B. Turner observes, “Everyone’s obviously coming out of a strong tradition and, yes, it’s pretty mainstream, but highly improvised and not locked into anything.” As 2000 nears, Messrs. Turner, Mehldau, Bernstein, Grenadier and Parker continue to make music with that sort of non-dogmatic attitude, one that undoubtedly will delight 21st century devotees of improvisation.”

For this release, Elemental Music Records has collaborated with producer Gerry Teekens, executive producer K. Hasselpflug, recording engineer Max Bolleman and Bernie Grundman for vinyl mastering and lacquer cutting.
