New York City, NY—Jazz Standard, New York's premier jazz club, was honored by The Recording Academy® as nominations for the 53rd Annual GRAMMY® Awards were announced last week. Mingus Big Band Live at Jazz Standard (Released June 2010) has been recognized in the Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album category. This marks Jazz Standard's first co-produced album release and subsequently first Grammy nod.

“We are thrilled to be honored by our peers for this unprecedented album of memorable music," says Seth Abramson, Artistic Director of Jazz Standard. “This is a chance to celebrate our long collaboration with Sue Mingus." Co-produced by Sue Mingus and Seth Abramson, Mingus Big Band Live at Jazz Standard marks the tenth Mingus Big Band recording, seven of which have been nominated for Grammys. According to Mingus, who produces Jazz Standard's long-standing “Mingus Mondays" series, “this recording embodies the essence of Charles Mingus' spirit."

Following the 88th birthday of legendary bassist, composer and bandleader Charles Mingus (1922-1979), Mingus Big Band Live at Jazz Standard keeps his repertoire alive. Recorded live at Jazz Standard on New Year's Eve as part of a nationwide NPR-WBGO “Toast of the Nation" broadcast, the CD celebrates some of Mingus' best-known tunes from exactly 50 years ago. Showcasing swinging dance tunes, gospel hollers, church music, lush ballads and, of course, the blues, “the music on this CD can't miss...crisp and crackling with life...fresh arrangements and top-notch musicianship."
