Miles Davis/Gil Evans: Still Ahead at the Hollywood Bowl

All-Star Jazz Line-up Celebrates Miles Davis and Gil Evans Partnership

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 5, 2009, AT 8 PM

Media Sponsor: KJAZZ 88.1

The 2009 Jazz series at the Hollywood Bowl continues on Wednesday, August 5, at 8pm, with Miles Davis/Gil Evans: Still Ahead, featuring soloists Terence Blanchard, Jimmy Cobb, Peter Erskine, Howard Johnson, Christian McBride and Nicholas Payton, backed by a jazz ensemble led by conductor Vince Mendoza. Miles Evans serves as artistic director and also performs as a soloist.

The friendship of arranger/composer Gil Evans and legendary trumpet player Miles Davis resulted in a collaboration of iconic recordings that are now staples of jazz. A collection of jazz greats come together at the Hollywood Bowl to celebrate the partnership of Miles Davis and Gil Evans by recreating the magic of their timeless partnership. For this special concert, bassist Christian McBride makes his final appearance at the Hollywood Bowl as the LA Phil's Creative Chair for Jazz. He is joined by legendary drummer Jimmy Cobb and tuba master Howard Johnson - who were both part of the original recording sessions with Davis and Evans - and Grammy-nominated artists Terence Blanchard and Nicholas Payton on trumpet, and Peter Erskine on drums, for an all-star recreation of the original charts for landmark Miles and Gil collaborations, including Porgy and Bess, Sketches of Spain, and Miles Ahead. This concert will also feature video footage of past recording sessions.

One of the largest natural amphitheaters in the world, with a seating capacity of nearly 18,000, the HOLLYWOOD BOWL has been the summer home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic since its official opening in 1922, and is home to the best and brightest in all genres of music. The 2004 season introduced audiences to a revitalized Hollywood Bowl, featuring a newly-constructed shell and stage and the addition of four stadium screens enhancing stage views in the venue. To this day, $1 buys a seat at the top of the Bowl for many of the Los Angeles Philharmonic's concerts. While the Bowl is best known for its sizzling summer nights, during the day California's youngest patrons enjoy “SummerSounds: Music for Kids at the Hollywood Bowl," the Southland's most popular summer arts festival for children, now in its 42nd season. In January 2009, the Hollywood Bowl was named Best Major Outdoor Concert Venue for the fifth year in a row at the 20th Annual Pollstar Concert Industry Awards; the Bowl's summer music festival has become as much a part of a Southern California summer as beaches and barbecues, the Dodgers, and Disneyland.
